No one should get cancer from university campus buildings.

Cancer caused by exposure to asbestos can take up to several decades to develop. Now is the time to seek justice.
Each day, as they have for the past many decades, millions of students, faculty, and staff study and work in buildings on American college campuses, many of them unknowingly being exposed to cancer-causing asbestos.

Asbestos-containing building materials (such as ceiling spray, floor tile, ceiling tile, and pipe insulation) were commonly installed in campus buildings years ago and largely remain there today. With time, fibers shed from these products and are scattered throughout buildings via heating and cooling ducts, inevitably being inhaled by persons within the building.

Asbestos exposure is the largest cause of occupational cancers in America – and it can take several decades (20-60+ years) to develop. The long delay between exposure and the development of the cancer, known as the latency period, means most victims are unaware their cancer may have been caused by asbestos exposure decades ago – perhaps even when they were students on campus.

Most colleges and universities today employ an “in-place” management approach when it comes to asbestos contamination – which means asbestos is removed from a particular area of a building only when the institution decides to renovate that particular area. Any other asbestos present in non-renovated areas remains in place. Pennsylvania State University employs this policy.

What is mesothelioma cancer?
Mesothelioma is a rare, progressive, and fatal cancer that primarily affects the body's chest cavity and abdominal cavity. The cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral.

Asbestos was commonly used as a construction material where it is present in various products, and in most industrial settings.  Examples of products that contain asbestos are building materials, machinery, automotive parts, and furniture.

Asbestos - a known cause of cancer
Asbestos has long been known to cause dangerous health effects in humans, including several forms of cancer, but the impact of long-term exposure has only been revealed in the past few decades. Tens of thousands of asbestos-related cases have been reported over the years and many individuals have suffered unjustly, including recent mesothelioma cases that stem from secondhand exposure to asbestos from a loved one.
